Books for Professional Speakers I recommend the following books for professional speakers because I found them helpful to me while developing my speaking business and I believe that you might find them useful as well. Some of these books helped me get started and others continue to be a reference for growing my business. I believe that great professional speakers are also relentless learners. The books are listed below in no particular order. As you might imagine from the selection, the most important books for the success of your speaking business were those on marketing and selling. If you don't read books then I believe that there is not much hope for you. By the way these books are where you should start not end. Speak and Grow Rich by Dottie Walters Prentice Hall This is the encyclopedia of professional speaking and a must read. Dottie Walters is a legend in the professional speaking business. Secrets of Power Marketing by Peter Urs Bender and George Torok Stoddart The first guide to personal marketing for the non-marketer. This book was written by two professional speakers for entrepreneurs and professional service providers. Million Dollar Consulting by Alan Weiss McGraw Hill Whether you plan to consult or not, read this book to understand the concept of selling value - not time. If you consult, this is a must read. Alan Weis is a professional speaker and high priced consultant. The Self-Publishing Manual How to Write, Print and Sell Your Own Book by Dan Poynter Para Publishing The best marketing tool for a professional speaker is a book. This book shows you everything you need to know to create your book. 1001 Ways to Market Your Book by John Kremmer Open Horizons Books in storage are useless to you. They must sell. Read this book before you write your book to best position your book and sell many more. This is the bible of book marketing. Sales on the Line by Sharon Drew Morgan Metamorphous Press A simple effective approach to cold calls. This book might be hard to find but it is worth while searching for. Selling your Skills by Robert Bly Henry Holt Great practical tips on selling your services especially professional speaking, consulting and training. Marketing Your Services by Rick Crandall Contemporary Books Exactly what the title says. A great resource - covers a lot. 6 Steps to Free Publicity by Marci Yudkin A Plume Book Simple and easy to follow techniques to get more publicity for your business, product or message. How to Get Your Point Across in 30 Seconds or Less By Milo O. Frank Pocket Books An important book for anyone in business and especially professional speakers. It shows you how to deliver a more effective message with less words. The Sales Bible: The Ultimate Sales Resource by Jeffrey Gitomer Wiley The title describes it well. The Non-Designer's Design Book by Robin Williams Peachpit Press Design and typographic principles for the visual novice. If you plan to use PowerPoint or any other visual media for your presentations then read this book first. Follow this advice and your audience will stay awake. The four principles of design will also help you improve your website and marketing materials. There are many other books that you should read but these are fundamental.
